Chez Xue is a no-tipping restaurant
We stopped accepting tips in December 2022 and are committed to never accepting tips in the future.
Why did we make this change?
Employers are responsible for paying their employees well
Many Americans believe that it is their responsibility to pay service workers well by tipping them. However, this responsibility actually lies exclusively with the employee’s employer. Service staff (servers, taxi drivers, baristas, etc.) feel cheated when customers don’t tip them, when in fact, they should be angry at their employer for paying them minimum wage, making them rely on the arbitrary generosity of the general public.
Our employees are not slaves
Our employees make a strong living wage and have dignity in their work.
Customers are not responsible for disciplining our employees
Many customers believe that they can “punish” or “correct” a server by leaving them less tips for bad service. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure good service, and we have many mechanisms in place to monitor our employees’ performance. If customers have complaints about the quality of the service they receive, they should address it with management.
Tipping is uncomfortable and awkward
We all dread having an iPad shoved in our face with 18%, 20%, and 25% as the tipping options. We awkwardly calculate tips at the end of the meal and hope the server will feel happy with what we have left.
